Before the Camera Rolls: How to Prepare for Your First Video Production Partnership

August 5, 2026

The Work That Happens Before the Work

The best video productions do not start on set. They start in a conversation - one where the right questions get asked, the right answers get uncovered, and a clear picture of your brand, your audience, and your goals takes shape before a single shot gets planned.

At Monarch Motion & Media, we call this the discovery process. It is one of the most valuable things we bring to every client relationship - and it is where the stories that move audiences actually get found. The brands that arrive at that conversation prepared walk away with content that performs. The brands that arrive unprepared spend production time doing work that should have happened weeks earlier.

This checklist gives you everything you need to walk into your discovery process ready - so we can spend that time building your story instead of searching for it.

Part One: Know Your Brand Story

Great video content starts with clarity. Before Monarch Motion & Media ever picks up a camera, we sit with our clients and work through the foundational elements that every piece of content needs to carry. Coming into that conversation with these elements already defined accelerates everything that follows.

Your Core Values

Your core values are the principles that drive every decision your business makes. They shape your culture, your client relationships, and the way your brand shows up in the world. Video content that carries your values feels authentic because it is - and audiences recognize the difference immediately. Know what your business stands for before we start building content around it.

Your Key Products and Services

Come prepared with a clear picture of what you offer, which offerings drive the most revenue, and which ones you most want to grow. Understanding your product and service priorities helps Monarch structure content that supports the parts of your business that matter most - and ensures every video we produce connects directly to a business outcome.

Your Community Focus

Who does your business serve? What community do you belong to, invest in, and show up for? Brands with a defined community focus produce content with a natural sense of purpose and belonging. If your business carries a commitment to a specific audience, a geographic community, or a cause - bring that into the discovery conversation. That focus often carries some of the most compelling stories your brand has to tell.

The Problems You Solve

Your audience does not buy products or services - they buy solutions to problems they are living with right now. The clearest, most compelling video content speaks directly to those problems and positions your brand as the resolution. Know the specific pain points your business addresses, the frustrations your clients arrive with, and the transformation your product or service creates in their lives. This is where the most powerful stories live.

Part Two: Bring Your Brand Identity

Your brand identity is the visual and verbal language your business uses to show up consistently across every platform and every piece of content. In post-production, brand consistency is everything - and it requires the right assets in the right formats. Arriving at your production partnership with these elements ready saves time, protects your brand, and ensures every deliverable looks exactly the way it should.

Logo Files

Provide your logo in PNG format with a transparent background. Bring every approved variation - primary logo, secondary logo, stacked version, icon or mark only. Logos saved as JPEGs, embedded in Word documents, or pulled from a website will not hold up in professional post-production. Clean, high-resolution PNG files give our team what we need to place your brand accurately across every deliverable.

Brand Style Guide

Your style guide is the rulebook for how your brand presents itself visually. It defines logo usage, color application, typography hierarchy, spacing rules, and approved graphic treatments. If your business has a style guide, bring it. If your business does not have one yet, flag that in your discovery conversation - Monarch can help identify what your brand needs to maintain consistency across your content.

Color Palette

Bring your brand colors in HEX codes for digital use and Pantone or CMYK values for print and broadcast applications. Color consistency across motion graphics, lower thirds, title cards, and transitions keeps your video content immediately recognizable as yours. Approximate colors pulled from a website screenshot introduce inconsistency that compounds across every deliverable.

Font Files

Your brand typography needs to travel with you into post-production. Bring the actual font files - not screenshots, not approximations, not similar alternatives. If your brand uses licensed fonts, confirm that your license covers use in video production. Typography consistency is one of the details that separates polished professional content from content that almost looks right.

Brand Voice and Tone Guidelines

Your brand voice is how your business sounds - the personality, the energy, the communication style that makes your content recognizably yours. Whether your brand speaks with authority, warmth, humor, or precision, that voice needs to carry through every script, every on-camera delivery, and every piece of copy that accompanies your video content. If your business has documented voice and tone guidelines, bring them. If that work has not happened yet, come prepared to describe how your brand sounds and how it does not.

Approved Photography and Visual Assets

Existing photography, brand imagery, and approved visual assets give our post-production team materials to work with when building graphics packages, title sequences, and supporting visuals. Bring high-resolution images that represent your brand accurately and reflect the visual standard your content needs to maintain. Low-resolution images pulled from social media will not hold up at production quality.

Part Three: Come Ready to Tell Your Story

The discovery process Monarch Motion & Media leads goes deeper than logistics. We are looking for the human story at the center of your brand - the moments, the decisions, the transformations, and the relationships that make your business worth knowing. The more openly you engage with these questions, the stronger the content we build together.

Come prepared to share:

  • The origin story of your business and why it exists

  • A client or customer whose life changed because of what you do

  • The moment your business faced a real challenge and came through it

  • What success looks like for the people your brand serves

  • The values and beliefs your brand holds that your competition does not

These are the stories that make audiences stop scrolling, feel something, and take action. They live inside every business - and the discovery process is where we find them together.

Strategy and Production Under One Roof

At Monarch Motion & Media, preparation is part of the process we lead. We guide every client through the discovery conversation that surfaces the stories, the strategy, and the brand clarity that great video content demands. You bring the vision and the assets. We bring the questions, the expertise, and the production that turns what you know about your business into content that works.

The more prepared you arrive, the faster we build - and the stronger every deliverable performs.
